World Aids Day Event 2007

Helen, teaching the signs and symptoms of STI's
Each year to raise awareness of Worlds Aids Day the Youth Team at Countesthorpe hold a huge event. We deliver workshops to tutor groups and have a drop in at lunchtime. The teachers at the College even affectionately call it the Sex Bus, but please be clear we are only educating not teaching sex!!
Every year sees a bigger and better event, we had an extra mobile provision this year so more young people could benefit. The sessions consisted on breaking taboos and myths around HIV and sex and also looked at what STI's were and what to do about them.
At lunch time we had the empathy belly and sim babies so that Young People could get a small taster about what it is like to have a baby. There was also the balls and boobs to examine for testicular and breast cancer.
Participants were invited to enter free prize draws and were consulted on how we can improve our sexual health services. There was also a HIV quiz and 3 people won £10.00 gift vouchers.
Finally young people were invited to make a pledge on how to show someone affection without having sex. There were some weird and wonderful answers but I think the message about thinking before doing got through.
It was a great day and thanks has to go out to the Countesthorpe Youth Team, School Nurses, Jane Tinsley, Street Vibe, 637 Bus, Leicester LGB Centre, Santosh Verma our Teenage Pregnancy Coordinator and Countesthorpe Community College. Without all of these people the event just wouldn't have been possible.

Jane wasn't sure if you could get HIV from leaflets!! (only joking of course you can't)

If this is what pregnancy is like then I will definitely use a condom
Do you know about our sexual health services?
Young and Responsible affectionately refered to as Condom Club is open to all young people aged 14+. It provides free, confidential advice and information on sexual health. You can ask anything, the workers are not shy, will not be shocked or judge you, and are here to support you.
We are able to provide a condom distribution service and pregnancy testing. There are formal sessions on Monday, Thursday and Friday Lunchtimes in the Youth Office at Countesthorpe College during term time. Out of term time the sessions will run Monday and Friday 12pm to 1pm at the School Clinic by Leysland School.
Cosby detached will have the street vibe bus visit once a month. Anyone who cannot get to the college can contact Tammy to arrange an appointment on 07795450519.
