VoxPop 2008
Transport Workshop
Melton Youth Council planned produced and took part in a transport workshop for VoxPop 2008. It proved to be very successful with a everyone joining in and working positively. From this we have managed to decide upon 3 priorities for the forth coming year.
Workshop 1
From the first workshop the two aims that came out were:
- A cheaper or reduced fare for anyone under 18.
- Frequency. Want more buses. We want buses in the evenings & weekends.
This workshop went very well with some very good case arguments coming out such as:
- Young people could potentially be using buses for the rest of their lives…give them a good experience in their youth, to ensure they will continue using the service.
- People have to be at least 18 to have a driving license, so will have to use public transport until then.
- Under 18s should have a half fare as they have no choice but to take public transport.
Workshop 2
Only 1 aim came out of this workshop (that hasn’t come up before) this was:
- Inspecting buses, to ensure safety that they are properly and thoroughly cleaned.
However some more excellent arguments for our points came out as well these were:
- Right now, there is no clear age, when half price fares stop. Companies vary on this issue, we want this to be addressed.
- Derby has all bus travel for under 18s free, why can’t we?
- All over 65s are going to get bus travel free, they’ve had a lifetime to earn enough for the travel, young people haven’t. This is unfair.
