How do you effectively consult with young people on developing facilities?
Re: Youth Centres in Pubs.
In NWLYC we did a district wide consultation regarding what young people wanted to see in NWL. A cinema and youth centre came out top however a ‘youth pub’ which functions exactly the same but did not serve alcohol was suggested and when we looked into it, it proved to be an extremely popular idea.
I used to live in a pub, we ran a youth club on a Sunday which made us a lot of money and everyone enjoyed it, even the adults talking to the young people. Before this happened we had a barrel of beer stolen by the young people but with doing the since starting the youth club there have been no more incidents.
Like Dean’s point earlier, I live in Measham and there is absolutely nothing for young people to do which therefore leads to increasing incidents of vandalism. There isn’t even a youth club. There used to be one in a grotty place called ‘The Picture Bar’ but that was closed years ago. Recently my mum’s boyfriend wrote a letter to either the Parish Council or the owners of the ‘bar’ asking why it was closed and they replied with a flimsy excuse. Surely having facilities for young people would reduce anti-social behaviour which would benefit the village in the long run, in money situations or others.
Please contact me as me and a lot of my friends in Measham feel very strongly about this issue.
