Transport Q&A
Are you aware of any other schemes in other counties that provide discount tickets that have been successfully implemented?
- Tokens that are exchanged in taxies and buses,
- These schemes are not mandatory so it is up to the bus companies,
- Someone will have to pay for it through taxes.
Is the pilot voucher scheme only for 16+?
Yes
What about under 16?
It has not been considered yet. We will look into it.
Which areas will the pilot happen?
Lutterworth, Bruntingthorpe, Bosworth, Burbage and Vale.
Will people be able to travel outside of the county using this scheme?
Yes, you will be able to travel to the major, neighbouring destinations outside of the county.
What about wheelchair users?
As of 2001 every new bus has to have wheel chair access. We also support voluntary buses with wheelchair access.
Will we be able to use the vouchers on trains?
The pilot will only cover Buses and Taxies, however if the pilot is successful then we will look at including trains in the scheme.
Why can’t students have concessionary fares like pensioners?
The money for that comes from the government and none of it has been allocated for Young People. We are trying!
Are you willing to work with CYCLe and other Youth Councils to go to government for funding?
- Yes
- It is discretionary so money can be raised through council tax. Many authorities want to provide facilities but it is pointless if we cannot fund them.
Why aren’t school buses inspected for cleanliness and safety?
- School buses are inspected. If you have a complaint about the state of your bus ring the helpline (the number is on the back of your bus pass).
- Remember to take your own rubbish off the bus.
- E-mail David Parsons and he will check up on the buses and inspectors.
A number of young people raised concerns about their School buses. David Parsons asked them to let him know the bus numbers so that he can check up on them.
How about working with PoP and doing some Mystery Shopper inspections, find out what real state of the buses is?
That’s an idea that had not occurred to us, we will look into that.
What can we do about the bad attitude of some bus drivers, and those using mobile phones and running red lights?
- Bus drivers are required to take 5 days training every 5 years that is all.
- It is an offence to use a mobile phone while driving or run a red light. You should report these drivers to the police.
