Crime and Safety Q&A

What laws are you breaking by using balls where you’re not meant to?

  • No law is actually being broken, though it may be a local bylaw.
  • It could be considered a breach of the peace.
  • Some people do not like Young People playing outside their house for privacy, threats or perhaps that they work nights.
  • You should try to find out who owns the land and approach them, they might be able to review it and change the ruling.

How can the County Council successfully help us to tackle bullying?

  • All councillors in the County Council want to have zero bullying. We are leading the Country with our policies and practices. Our current bullying trend is down, while the rest of the country is up.
  • Last week was the launch of Bullying awareness week.
  • Each school is required to have an anti-bullying strategy. If you are being bullied and the school are not doing anything about it then get your parents to write to the chair of the school governors and send a copy to Cllr Oulds.
  • The police are willing to talk with M.A.D. (Make a Difference) to see what they can do to help.
  • CYCLe are invited to discuss Bullying with Scrutiny. Work with Lesley / Neil and see about putting it on the agenda in the summer.

What does the council do about racism in schools?

The county council were not sure what they do.

At Libby’s school (Ashby?) they have blocked all communication on the internet to “stop cyber bullying”, however now the young people simply read the offensive e-mail at home where there is no support network.

There is nothing we can do to make the school change their policy but we can speak with them and other head teachers.

How is the council going to stop drink being sold to Young People?

Checks are made but the problem is adults buying drinks for under 18s. The community is the most effective way of tackling this, if you know something is happening report it to the police.

Anti social behaviour is only done by a few young people. What can the County Council do to promote the majority of Young People who are good?

  • Events like VoxPop are a good start. Young People need more publicity.
  • Cllr Oulds suggested that there should be a feature about the good things young people have done in each edition of the Leicestershire Matters.
