The University Hospitals of Leicester Membership

The University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL) wants to hear from young people. We are now a membership organisation and are looking for young people age 16 and over to become members. Membership is free.

The really important part….why do we want you to become members?

We believe that the NHS and local hospitals belong to the people who use them, your friends and loved ones and all the other people who live locally and may one day use the services we provide. You have new ideas. We know having you as members will really make a difference in how are hospitals are run.

As a member you choose how involved you want to be. You could go the whole way and seek to be elected as a Governor of the Trust or you can just ask to be kept in touch. It is your choice and either way we will be delighted to have you ‘on board’.

About us

We now take care of over 1 million patients a year (from Leicestershire, Rutland, Northamptonshire, Lincolnshire and beyond), which means that we are one of the biggest hospital trusts in the country. We also employ over 13,000 staff.

The reason that we are called ‘University’ Hospitals of Leicester’ is that we are also a ‘teaching trust’. This means that we work alongside Leicester’s universities to train new doctors and nurses coming into the NHS. This is important because teaching trusts lead in the development of new and better ways to care for and treat patients.

Did you Know?
• We treat 375 people a day in the Emergency Department
• We deliver 9,400 babies every year
• We have ‘balanced the books’ every year for the past 6 years
• We have over 1000 volunteers.

Medicine for Members

One of the most popular events we run is called ‘Medicine for Members’. This is where a health expert talks each month on a variety of health topics. Please see attached for details of the ‘medicine for members’ timetable’. Members and their guests are welcome and non- members can attend and sign up to become a member on the evening if they choose to do so.

We are putting on a ‘Medicine for Members’ event on Tuesday 4th December, particularly with young people in mind. Of course all ages are welcome. The talk is called ‘Sexual Health and Contraception’. UHL consultant in G U Medicine Dr Schobler, will lead the talk along with other health experts. The event will take place on December 4th at Leicester General Hospital, Clinical Education Centre from 6pm to 8pm. To register places, please call 0116 258 8685 or email andrea.clark@uhl-tr.nhs.uk .

The event will be made into a DVD which will be available to members for £3.

On the evening young people attending will be asked about other health topics or health related issues they would like to know more about to inform future events of this kind. There will also be the opportunity to ask questions anonymously in written form as well as an open question and answer session at the end of the talks.

A certificate of attendance will be available on the night if required.
