The Golems Eye
By Jonathan Stroud
The Bartimaeus Trilogy (book 2)
Stroud takes us back to Nathaniel, now John Mandrake, who is working his way up the chain in government, and a very angry Bartimaeus. Another character makes her way into the story – Kitty Jones. We learn of her life as a child and how she came to be in the position she is in now.
As Mandrake investigates some supposedly Resistance activities he unveils yet another plot to over throw the Prime Ministers rule. Can Nathaniel save the government again?
There is a traitor in government and he wants to take over Britain and the empire, he does this by using a Golem. Golems were last used in the day of William Gladstone when he was trying to expand the empire into Prague - it was a fight that Bartimaeus was in, he recognises the pattern of destruction of the Golem but no one listens to him as he is only a djini and they, supposedly, cannot be made again.
Once again the footnotes from Bartimaeus are quick, witty and sarcastic and produce some truly laugh out loud moments. He is his normal annoying self and is as discourteous as ever.
Nathaniel is as demanding as ever and he grows ever more like the other devious magicians who only ever think about themselves. He is under pressure from all his superiors as he is highly thought of by the Prime Minister and they expect him to do well but they can't wait for his demise as he is becoming more powerful than they ever expected, too powerful perhaps.
Another fantastic read and I would say it is suitable for anyone 13+ who likes a bit of fantasy and real life mixed together.
