What's it about?
The Factory is a street based youth club where it meets up with Asian young men who live in Loughborough, Leicestershire. It works with young people aged 11- 25 years of age.
When and where did it begin?
The project was set up in 2000. It aims to increase the active participation of Asian young men in the work of the Leicestershire Youth Service. It was founded by two detached youth workers and a small group of young people who met a derelict warehouse, which gave the group its name.
What does it do?
The young people have taken part in lots of activities including discussions with the police- improving the service by working better with the community, having debates, challenging racism, campaigning, education workshops about health, relationship, drugs, alcohol, family etc. Outdoor pursuits, camping, visits to museums and places of interest, film making, helping young people to get jobs working in partnership with other agencies, support & advice on getting back to school or college and so on.
Example
“It was really good fun, I enjoyed every bit of camping. I wanted to stay the group was part of my family, we were all brothers. We had our ups and downs and we learnt from our mistakes and understood how to avoid conflicts. I learnt to participate and work in groups and teams, developing trust in each other”

Previous Work
The Factory led and organised a local pressure group to extend a local community centre in order to increase its capacity for carrying out more youth work and other activities. This campaign became successful securing of several hundreds of thousands of pounds for the building work. Which now has been completed and is up and running.
