Schools Fashion Show 2007 – March 28th 2007, Athena Theatre, Leicester

Well, driving up to the new Athena theatre (the old Odeon!) in Leicester, I wasn’t sure what to expect as I was just supporting my friends and college strutting their stuff down the catwalk. As I pulled up, there were parents, friends, teachers and so on milling around inside and outside excited about the night ahead. The new theatre as well as looking great on the outside, looks fabulous inside.

The night and the acts were introduced by Leicester Sound’s Rae and Kev, who made banter and conversation between themselves and with the audience. The Schools Fashion Show 2007, was made up of 22 different acts participating for GCSE and A-Level, from 14 different schools and colleges. Everyone who took part in the evening had produced what they were wearing and had choreographed their own routine to a piece of music of their choice. I was overwhelmed by the standard of all the schools and colleges’ hard work and determination which resulted in a fantastic show! There was such a wide range and variety of themes and different garments being modelled and to such a high standard, of which I was so impressed! Some were based on animals, different periods in time and history (of not just fashion but historical events, such as the Black Death), colour, food, paper and many, many more.

Originally, I went to support my two friends who were taking part and to support my college of which were amazing, and actually better than I imagined. The GCSE students danced and strode down the catwalk to ‘Same Jeans’ by The View and the 16+ department put on a fantastically choreographed routine to Christina Aguilera’s ‘Candyman’.

Each act was being judged for two categories (GCSE and A-Level) for the best choreographed piece. The groups were competing not just being crowned winners, but to spend a day at De Montfort University’s textile and fashion department. Overall, William Bradford Community College and Groby Community College won. William Bradford produced ‘Reptilian Masquerade’ which was fantastic and Groby Community College produced ‘Victorian Secrets’ where the dress was pretty traditional before breaking out into a Moulin Rouge style can-can and dramatic costume change.

I went away feeling extremely impressed about what I had seen over the whole duration of the evening over all 22 of the acts. I also admired them for being able to perform to their audience with their wonderful creations making an amazing night.
