Motion City Soundtrack
I went to the Carling Academy in Birmingham to see Motion City Soundtrack and it was amazing. When we got there, there was a supporting band playing, Straylight Run, most of the crowd were just standing around because the songs they were playing were really quite depressing. Everybody had come to the concert ready to take part and enjoy it, but the supporting band fell far from what was expected. When they finished MCS (Motion City Soundtrack) finally came on, from then on it was brilliant.
This was my first concert without my parents, so I didn’t really know what to expect. I went with my sister and she told me a certain amount, but nothing really prepared me for what actually happened.
As soon as the music started the crowd began to move, and as they played their second song of the night things really got going. Before I knew there were circles and mosh pits all over the place, beer being thrown around along with cups, bottles and even glow sticks. I was being squashed and shoved all over the place, you had to jump when the crowd did or you’d get trampled on. At one point I staggered out of the crowd to catch my breath before throwing myself back in.
I was not expecting anything like this, but I loved every minute of it. The band was absolutely fantastic and they didn’t just play their new album from beginning to end like some bands do, they played a mixture of songs from all of their albums.
They started with ‘I Fell in Love Without You’ from their third album ‘Even If It Kills Me’. They played for about 2 hours, they played 1 song from their 1st album ‘I Am The Movie’, which was released in June 2003. They also included 4 songs from their 2nd album ‘Commit This to Memory’, which was out in June 2005, and 5 songs from their newest album ‘Even If It Kills Me’, released in September 2007.
There were a few things that went wrong during the concert; lead singer (Justin Pierre) had a lot of problems with his guitar. It kept going out of tune so he changed it. However his second one appeared to be worse than the first because he switched back to his first one. The bass guitarist (Matthew Tyler) kept tuning his guitar all the way through the concert. To top it all off Pierre started to lose his voice ¾ of the way through the performance.
Despite all of these things the crowd still had a brilliant time, when Pierre lost his voice the crowd sang it for him. When they went off stage at the end the crowd started to chant ‘we want motion’ and they came back on stage to play two final songs. They played Attractive today and Everything Is Alright from their second album, Commit This to Memory.
I really enjoyed this experience and would love to see Motion City Soundtrack in concert again, they perform brilliantly live and play excellently to the crowd. Their music has its own style and I think that they will become quite famous.
I personally think that each time they release an album it’s better than the one before. I liked I Am The Movie, but when Commit This To Memory came out I thought it had some of the best songs I had ever heard on it. Somehow they managed to top it with Even If It Kills Me, which has some excellent music and in my opinion some of their best work so far.
