The Council’s Arts in Education service runs a program of activity and teaching for young people between the ages of 6 and 18 in Leicester and Leicestershire. They provide tuition for many musical instruments, choral and solo singing, contemporary dance, ballet, Kathak dance and drama.

To help you learn to play an instrument, they even have an instrument hire service. If you are an Arts in Education student, you can hire one of their instruments for a small annual fee.

As a first step to learning a musical instrument, dance or drama, you should speak to the school or college that you attend. A number of them will already be using the Arts in Education service (even though some of you may not realise it!), so it should be easy for you to get involved. Otherwise, you can contact Arts in Education directly on the phone number or email address above.

Arts in Education students have won a number of awards. For example the Symphonic Wind Band and Training Band won gold and silver awards respectively at a National Band Contest this year. Their contemporary dance group won a Fringe First award at the Edinburgh Festival in 1995. The first time a youth group has ever won such a prestigious award.

The service also runs dance and drama workshops during the summer holiday. You should contact them directly for enquiries.

So instead of just thinking about learning to play a musical instrument, learning dance or getting into drama, why not actually do it?
