Grave of the Fireflies (12)

Grave of the Fireflies

A heartouching WW2 story

Made by Japanese Studio Ghibli, Grave of the Fireflies is a heart breaking film about 2 children struggling for survival during the terrifying time of World War II in Japan. It was originally released in Japan in 1998 and was eventually translated into English and sold in America and now in the UK. Grave of the Fireflies has a high reputation as an anime classic.

Seita and his little sister Setsuko run for their lives during an air raid. However, their mother died and their father is serving in the navy. They both have to survive in the devastated countryside of Japan.

Seita and Setsuko stay with their relatives, but they are only concerned by their own survival. With food and shelter scarce, all they have is each other and the will to carry on.

This anime is truly groundbreaking and shows the devastating consequences of war. I have watched it twice, and both times I cried. In my opinion, I prefer to watch anime in Japanese. I think it sounds a lot better. What ever language you watch it in, it truly is an amazing film, but be prepared for tears!
