Girl's Group

The Girls group at Greenhill Youth Centre has regular attendance of 10-15 young women, is well established and has very clear perspective in what it provides.
Whilst technically a generic club, the staff with the young women ensure that the programme reflects the needs and aspirations of those that attend.

Recent topic areas include the following, personal safety, sexual health, ‘baby think it over’, first aid and drugs education, these give an insight into the level of content and where the club it is at. Couple with this other interests of ‘Local Award work’ forming a football team and going on a residential, it is a very active and enjoyable time for those that attend.
However, staff do very well at times to ensure all the above has happened as with all single sex work characters within the group seem to become stronger and more forthright. Thus, team building and conflict resolution skills are required to sometimes ‘keep the group on track’.

Girl's Group

This term, the group are entering a team on ‘Football Icon’, a residential loosely based on ‘Sky 1 channel’s’ a Footballer’s dream in becoming a Professional Player. 12 young women, 7 from Greenhill, 5 from Castle Donnington will spend a weekend having training from a Leicester City Coach, play against another girl’s team and go to watch L.C.F.C play against Q.P.R. The confidence, self esteem, team building and community cohesion that will come from this will hopefully live up to what it promises to be. There is also plans to undertake re-designing a garden for the local 'old people's sheltered housing scheme on the estate to put something back into the local community and harmonise relations between young and old.
Both projects successfully ran

What the girls think...

What was the best thing?

"Completing the sensory garden for the elderly, improving relationships on the estate and seeing the benefit of our hard work.
Working together has a team to win a 5 a-side competition.
Going on a residential and making friends with other young people from other youth centres ( before we were rivals)
Going out for a meal and experiencing different foods.
ALL 15 girls passing the first aid qualification.
Winning the Nationwide Regional Winners for our sensory garden and we will soon be going to the Nationwide Awards Presentation"

Why do you go there and what makes it different from other clubs?

"It's just for girls, so can talk honestly about issues that effect us without the embrassment of the lads being around.
Get to do loads of fun things.
Started coming to the youth centre, hadn't got the confidence to attend senior group, but attending the girls group gave me the confidence.
Making friends.
The youth workers are interested in us.
Finding ways to work together as a team, when playing in football tournaments, before, we argued between ourselves and lost. We even argued with the other team, now we keep in touch and have some good friends from the experience. What surprised me was'They are just the same as us!" .
Really enjoyed the sensory garden and would love to do another project soon."
