The fifth release from Dave Grohl’s Foo Fighters since their first in 95. ‘In Your Honour’ consists of two separate discs of contrasting styles. The first disc being loud fast paced and ‘shouty’ in places, the second a lot slower, deeper and emotional.
"Everyone in the band has so much to offer," Grohl says. "But we'd sort of remained in this one 'thing' for so long that I felt it was time to break out, to branch out, that maybe we should make the acoustic record…but then I started thinking about how I didn't want to show up to the Reading Festival with a harpsichord, or whatever. This band just has to make some rock music so I thought, OK, why don't we do this? Why don't we make a DOUBLE album?"
For me one of the best and most meaningful songs on the album is disc one’s ‘Best of You’, the first track from the album to be released. The slow verses tie in perfect with another fantastically catchy chorus. The song is about the fragility of the heart asks many questions of love and humanity.
Has someone taken your faith?
Its real, the pain you feel
The life, the love
You die to heal
The hope that starts
The broken hearts
You trust, you must
Confess
Were you born to resist or be abused?
I swear I’ll never give in
I refuse
Lyrics like this really interest me and I still wonder about the story behind them. It’s fantastically sung again by Dave Grohl and I really like the varying drum beat behind him. Sometimes the guitars/drums can overpower him on the softer verses but this can be easily overlooked. For me his voice is perfect for this kind of song, capable of the loud, shouty, intense pieces and yet can be so quiet, low and emotional.
‘DOA’ is another great song in my opinion from the album. It was the next to be released and the video still confuses me a little, strange scenes of gravity shifts and lots of sagging cheeks and holding on to lamp posts to prevent falling upwards. (:S)
The song itself again mixes slow, deep verses with catchy chorus vocals. Lyric-wise again it’s good. The song is based on Life and Death.
I went down and I fell, I fell so fast |
It's a shame we have to die my dear |
Although I prefer Disc ones rock tracks a few of the acoustic tracks are still excellent. The one that sticks out the most for me though is ‘Razor'.
‘Razor’ is one of the slowest Foo Fighters songs I’ve heard and makes a calm end to the second disk. It has almost no background music at all, just a quiet, repeating acoustic tune. Despite this I think it’s still one of the albums best.
Although many songs on the album are great there are a few that, well…aren’t. ‘In Your Honour’ is the albums opening track and I really don’t think it’s a good starter. It has a very quiet start and begins to build up, but just as you expect a loud and strong climax then song starts to slow again. I think the song could have easily been so much better and should have been to open the album.
Overall I love the album. A few disappointments but the positives greatly overrule the negatives. I recommend this album to any rock listeners, especially Foo Fighter fans. Although not as strong as some of their previous albums it’s definitely worth a buy if you’re into this style.
Another success by one of my favourite bands!
