Eyres Monsell Youth Club

A group of local teenagers have broken through to the next round of a national five a side football tournament after entering for the first time.

The Under 19s team from Eyres Monsell Youth Club came first out of 16 teams who played in the local rounds held at Goals Soccer Centre, Wakerley Road, Leicester on March 10th.

Liam Mayes, an 18 year old BTEC student at Regent College, said: “They asked us to enter a team after watching us play on the ball court next to the youth club every week.

“It was great to win. It felt really good because we’re all just six mates who entered for a laugh and managed to win.”

Liam, who plays in centre midfield for his college team and has been approached by several Saturday and Sunday league teams, also said that the trophy brought home by the team was the first that the club had ever won.

The team are now hoping to make a repeat performance in the regional finals to secure their place in the national finals held at the Bolton Football grounds

Talent scouts from some of the country’s top football clubs will also be at the finals with the hope to sign talented up and coming footballers.

Liam added: “I know we can do it, and I’d love to be spotted by Liverpool scouts, but I’d just love to get a chance to play and do something I love.”

The regional tournament will take place in Derby on April 14th.
