Eclipse
By Stephanie Meyer

The Third of the Twilight Series

There’s a group of newborn vampires loose in Seattle. The Culluns don’t want to intervene as that’s the Volturie’s job but they can’t not do anything at the same time. Tensions grow between Edward and Bella and Bella and Jacob because Edward doesn’t want Bella to see him because old prejudices get in the way. As the problem with the new vampire’s gets worse should the Culluns take action? Will they need help from the werewolves? Can these new vampires be stopped? Is Victoria, the vampire from Twilight who wanted Bella dead, to blame? Can Edward, Jacob and Bella come to an agreement?

Eclipse was a lot slower to get going than Twilight and New Moon as the real reason for the vampire’s existence is kept a secret for a long time but once the tension and action starts it doesn’t stop and as the tension grew I found that I wanted to be there to comfort and support the characters.

Once again Edward wants to keep Bella safe but she’s worried about everyone except herself. Charlie could be in danger once again, although he doesn’t know it, as well as her school friends. Edward’s family have sworn to keep Bella safe but that also puts them in the face of danger, Bella doesn’t want that to happen but she knows it’s inevitable.

We also find out about Rosalie’s and Jasper’s past and how they came to be vampires which helps us understand why they are more standoffish towards Bella than the rest of Edward’s family.

The end was heart wrenching with Bella having to choose between Jacob (who she discovers she also loves) and Edward who is all her life. Both Edward and Jacob have to endure the agonizing wait whilst she decides who to choose. Who will she choose? If you're thinking that maybe I'll spoil the end and tell you who she picks, you're out of luck.

After I got started reading I found it so hard, almost impossible to put the book down (only the promise of food made that happen). As Bella’s graduation draws nearer as well as her change from human to vampire Bella’s feeling about those worries kept me hooked before it got truly exciting.

There were some moments of fighting where I cringed because of the thought of vampires loosing arms and werewolves, vampire’s natural enemy, being thrown against trees and rocks along with the description of the sound the breaking of bones made.

A lot of emotion and hard work has gone into this fantastic book. I’d recommend it to anyone over 14, a love of the supernatural is a must if you want to thoroughly enjoy yourself as you get absorbed into this mythical, modern world novel.
