Citizens Advice Bureaux

What are they?

A charitable trust was set up in 1991 in order for Citizens Advice Bureaux around the country to provide free, confidential and independent advice from over 3,200 locations. Advice is given out in all sorts of places including in bureaux themselves as well as in; GP surgeries, hospitals, colleges, prisons and courts.

Advice is available either by face-to-face meetings or by telephone. Quite a few even offer home visits and some also provide email advice. Their advice helps people resolve their debt, benefits, housing, legal, discrimination, employment, immigration, consumer and other problems and is available to everyone regardless of race, gender, sexuality, age, nationality, disability or religion. This means that their advice and support is available to you!

The experience of Citizens Advice Bureaux gives a unique, fresh insight into the problems facing people from all across the UK. Because the Citizens Advice service has always provided free, independent advice it has the opportunity to use clients' experiences to influence national and local services and policies, based upon their evidence of CAB clients' problems. They have a key role in speaking up for clients, raising issues brought into bureaux, contributing to public debate and informing legislation.
