Freedom Of Information (exemption) Act.
The freedom information act was discussed in the House of Commons in 2000, later in 2005 MPs voted for the freedom of Information act to be in place. It applies to:
• Central governments and government Department
• Local authorities
• Hospitals, doctors, surgeries, pharmacists, dentists and opticians
• Sate schools, colleges and universities
• Police forces and prison services
(source from : www.ICO.gov.uk)
There are exemptions to the act, including issues such as national security, law enforcement, commercial interest and data protection; all of these in certain circumstances of override the act.
In 2006/2007 there was a debate in the House of Commons and the House of Lords to decide whether or not to abolish the freedom of information act because the information from the government bodies was “Too liberally available”. This sparked up a very big debate and many politicians are against it. But some politicians are very much against the freedom of information act because their expenses can be considerable with some alleged questionable items, but this is under the guise of “it may allow access to private letters to MPs from their constituents.
A number of years ago, South Yorkshire Police conducted an investigation to an alleged corruption where Members and officers of a Metropolitan council spent hundreds and thousands of local tax payers, on junkets / hospitality and so on, and this was the very sort of thing that spurred the creation of the act, surely?
Therefore, the exemption of freedom of information is a sure step backwards. Should MPs be ashamed of themselves? Because not only, allegedly have certain MPs misused their expenses, but are also trying to cover them up with the exemption act.
