Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare – PS 3

Finally, Call of Duty has come out of World War 2 and reached the forefront of modern warfare in their award-winning Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

In an intense introduction to one of the best FPS (first person shooter) I have played to date, it begins with you being part of the introduction (literally). Gone are the days of watching a visually spectacular video storyline leading in to the game, you are in the story’s intro and part of every moment while the credits roll.

The very basic storyline is that you play in a combined effort as the British SAS and the US Special Forces in an attempt to stop a Russian Ultranationalists Army from firing nukes and blowing up parts of the United States of America.

The scenes are set throughout the Middle East as you play various roles throughout the campaigns, making use of both British and American artillery as well as certain war-craft weapons to stop the threat of terrorism.

As with all modern warfare games you have to question whether the timing of releasing such a game could be controversially criticised and compared to modern day wars currently on-going in the Middle East and other parts of the globe. But, Infinity Ward (the creators of COD) has designed a tastefully accurate and definitely intense vision of a modern war within a games console. Better still, using the capabilities that the PS3 offers to their advantage gives the game an eerily real feeling to the game with visually stunning in-game graphics and amazingly good playability.

So, what are the good, the bad and the ugly comments about the game?

The good things about this game is basically everything, it has everything to be a top FPS game which keeps you engrossed in the game play for hours.

The multiplayer options and playability are great, with hours of fun with your friends which can be played out on the various environments you have unlocked during single player mode.

Which leads to the bad points? The game isn’t very long and was easily completed within about 5 hours. And when you play the game over through another difficulty level you will find that you are torn to shreds in an attempt to battle through an unreal environment as armies of enemies come to target your squad of 4 men, which detracts from the fun of the game itself.

The ugly? Well this is a good note for those that like realistic gore to their game play. CoD4 gives you very well made and detailed effects to the way the enemy is killed. No more unrealistic “rag-doll” effects every time you shoot someone, when you do hit someone and it is in the arm, leg or torso you will find that they will survive and continue to shoot as well as find cover. The AI gives the enemy almost a survival mode to stay alive whilst continuing to fight on, which again, gives the illusion that the game has a more realistic touch, adapting to the environments and strategising different methods of combat.

Overall, this game is a fantastic FPS which with the combined capabilities of the Playstation 3 and spectacular audiovisual game play gives the game it’s well deserved awards and recognition as being one of the best FPS genres to date.
