A Spot of Bother- By Mark Haddon

From the author of the hugely popular "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time" comes a humorous family drama. Although written for adults, the book is an enjoyable read for teenagers, although there are some sexually explicit passages that are not suitable for younger readers.

The book is written in a witty, friendly, observant style, that gives a fabulous insight into typical family life.

The book tells the tale of George and his family, as they go through a series of fairly normal events. George is happily settling into retirement, until he discovers a lesion on his hip that he believes to be cancer.

During the preperations for his daughter Katie's wedding, George discovers that his wife is having an affair, and slowly slips into dementia. His mental health deteriorates rapidly and through an act of self-harm, George ends up in hopsital.

I won't spoil the ending, but the book is heart felt and made me laugh, cry and smile. The themes are perhaps aimed at mature beings, but the writing style is quite readable. As a teenager, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and most certainly look forward to Haddon's next offering.
