The Riddle

Maerad has a dark bitter past which is full of tragedy, but she gains an upper hand, in the quest to find the Treesong, as her powers grow stronger by the day. The Treesong is the key to returning the Seven Kingdoms to a place of peace instead of the war tourn kingdom that it has become. As she and her mentor, Cadvan of Lirigon, are persued by the Light and the Dark she travels from stormy seas to the coldness of the mountains that The Gwalhain Pass goes through she is taken ever closer to her emeny, and the maker of all her troubles: the Winterking and even closer to the Nameless One - the greatest tyrant of them all.

After reading The Naming (the first book of Pellinor where Cadvan saves Maerad form a life of slavery and she finds out who she really is and also faces many dangers and starts her quest) I was very impressed with this one, there is the same level of attention to detail from the coldness and desolation of The Gwalhain Pass in the mountains right down to the ache of the characters hearts and bones.

The Riddle is a book that had me gripped ‘til the very end and captured my imagination. I easily found myself absorbed into Maerad’s world and easily pictured myself going through all of the events with her.

As there is a lot of back story you need to know to understand what is happening you need to read The Naming before you read this one, it’s also a book I’d recommend as it has the same brilliance as this one.

I’d say this book is suitable for anyone who is over 13 and has a wild and active imagination, and a love of fantasy is a must.
