The Lord Lieutenant’s Awards are open to young people aged 13-19 years and living in Leicester and Leicestershire. The award was initiated by the Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire, Lady Gretton, who wanted to identify and reward the best examples of achievement amongst our young people. This is the fifth year the awards have been running.

Lady Gretton said:

“Young people are key members of society and it is important that their positive role within our community is recognised and celebrated. There are many good examples of what young people have achieved, sometimes despite great disadvantage and obstacles placed before them. I would urge people to nominate people they know and who they think should be recognised by these awards.”

The award recognises and rewards young people who have demonstrated exceptional volunteering, leadership, commitment or determination in five specific categories. Each category will have three short-listed candidates, with one winner for each section and one overall winner. Each category winner is awarded a prize worth £500 with prizes also given to the runners-up. The categories are:

  • Bravery – Overcoming personal barriers to achieve success, making a stand against bullying, racism etc, or a life-saving act of bravery.
  • Kindness in helping others – Supporting an elderly neighbour or relative, fundraising, etc.
  • Improving the community – Commitment to improving their school, community or local environment.
  • A voice for young people – Contribution to promoting the views of children and young people in decision making.
  • Creativity and innovation – Demonstrating fresh thinking and new ideas in the arts, music, engineering or computing.

From the winners of these categories one person will be announced as Lord-Lieutenant’s Young Person of the Year.
