The Fire Eternal
The fourth book in the "Ice Fire" series from the brilliant Chris d'Lacey. In this book we return to Wayward Crescent to catch up with the previous lead characters, now three year old daughter.
The story generally puts global warming into perspective in an imaginary sort of way. Although the book is full of very unreal things, such as clay dragons that can talk and stories about ancient dragons from years gone by, it makes use of the present day global problems such as the melting ice caps and the extinction of polar bears. The Fire Eternal revolves around clay dragons that can change the world by defeating the darkness that will overcome the Earth if they fail. The book generally makes you think abou tmodern day issues and it also adds a touch of fantasy which makes it so much more interesting.
Compared to the three previous books, I had high expectations for the fourth book in the series. It certainly didn't disappoint! Where the other books were very much fiction with hardly any issues that actually affect the reader, the Fire Eternal makes the reader get so absorbed in the book almost all of them will understand some of the issues that affect the characters in the book. Personally, I got so engrossed in the book that I could hardly put it down while I was reading it and got so involved in the characters thoughts that I could see what would hapen a long time before the actual character!
I would definitely recommend the book for any confident reader over thirteen who likes reading books that contain factual points but has plenty of drama and a great climax mixed in. Imaginations are essential!!
