The Tall Ships - Interview

The Tall Ships

“The Guardian" labelled Brighton based trio, The Tall Ships, as “Brainiac Indie", and if they haven't copyrighted that term, they probably should do (or else I need to send one of our editors out to get that done asap for us). In the meantime however, we were lucky enough to have Grace on hand to interview them…

So first off how did you all meet?

Matt: Erm how did we meet? Jamie and Ric have known each other for erm how long have you know each other?

Ric: Too long

Matt: Too long. And we all went to uni together in Falmouth. And then I stumbled across them, and then we started messing around in the bedroom. Take that how you want! And then, Yeah that was it really that's how we got together.

You’ve released your ep, how’s it gone? ‘Cause we brought it last week!

Ric: It’s gone alright. We’ve released two EP’s and were just surprised that there both actually, people like them and have been buying them and stuff. So yeah its cool. It’s just wicked to actually have CD’s out. Proper CD’s and that. Which is pretty cool, so yeah it’s alright!

It’s been playing a lot in my car anyway! The song plate tectonics is a weird name for a song, what was the inspiration for that? Is it something to do with geography?!

Ric: Yeah well it’s all about, well its geology isn’t it? Well yeah it's cool it's using plate tectonics as a metaphor for romance, so yeah it’s about, well we reference a lot of natural phenomenon in our lyrics and stuff cause I think that's what inspires us most. So that's kind of where we go from.

What are your plans for future releases?

Jamie: Our next singles out on the 6th June it’s called “Hit the Floor". It's gonna be out on a 7 inch, and then we're recording an album in August I think. Don’t know when that's coming out yet. It’s got no release date, or label, so yeah, then lots of touring, festivals and what not

That leads me on to my next question! Will you be playing at any festivals this year?

Matt: Yes we will be! We're playing quite a lot of small ones. We're playing like up the cuff, we just did live at Leeds, 2000 Trees, and then we're playing Bestival which we're really excited about.

Who are your biggest influences musically?

Ric: George Michael, Craig David, Backstreet Boys,

I love Backstreet Boys!

Ric: They're f*****g great aren’t they!

I went to see them like two years go

Ric: nooooo 2 years ago?

They had a new album out!

Ric: f**k off really!

I was 18 rows from the front!

Ric: ohh immense how was it?

Amazing! I cried

Ric: What with joy or pain?

No ‘cause before the show they kept showing clips of the band and when Nicks came on I cried cause I was excited!

Ric: amazing! Well yeah so apart from all that, I think Battles are a big influence on us cause they're just an incredible band and they completely changed the face of guitar music with their album “Mirrored". And then Sigur Ros are a huge influence cause there so… beautiful!

Matt: who are my influences? Erm I'm trying to think, The Cult.

Jamie: I don’t really listen to music.

Finally what tips do you have for budding musicians?

Ric: Just have a lot of fun. Do it for yourself completely and just have fun. And write music to play live cause that's what it’s about. That's where the biggest buzz comes from. Yeah it’s all about having fun. Don’t take it too seriously, cause if you take it seriously it just doesn’t work out

Matt: Yeah I was just gonna say the same. You've summed it up! Erm don’t play on a hangover. Don’t drink before you play!
