The Summer of a Lifetime project

Mon 11th July to Fri 23rd September, 2011

As you may know, this year the Government launched a pilot scheme of the National Citizen Service and FOCUS, in partnership with v and the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust, have been asked to deliver it in Leicester(shire) for 60 young people.

We are now recruiting 60 Year 11 students to take part in our unique Summer of a Lifetime project

Who’s it for?

The Summer of a Lifetime project is open to anyone currently in Year 11 (or possibly older in exceptional circumstances). We’re looking to create teams of young people who represent a range of backgrounds and abilities. Everyone is welcome - it’s certainly not just about the ‘high flyers’. All we ask is that they are able to commit to a summer of residential events and community projects and that they are able and willing to work in a team alongside other young people.

And it‘s free to all young people!

Who’s running it?

The project is funded by the Government, but is being delivered by FOCUS, a local young people’s charity. FOCUS has been running residential and community-based projects for over 22 years and has supported over 16,000 young people.

What will the young people do?

The project commences with two week-long residential projects (in late July / early August) that will help the young people to develop their leadership, communication and team working skills. After that they will spend up to four weeks planning and delivering a project that benefits their local community. Throughout the project they will be supported by staff and volunteers from FOCUS and by mentors from the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust. These mentors will all be internationally successful athletes, who will seek to motivate and inspire the young people. The attached leaflet provides some further details. The project will culminate in a celebration event at the end of September.

I hope you’ll agree that this project could be a fantastic opportunity for some of your students to genuinely experience their ‘Summer of a Lifetime’ – an experience that they’ll never forget that will help them to develop their employability skills, develop lifelong friendships and greatly increase their self-confidence and belief in what they can achieve.

What happens next?

We‘re running a short ‘taster' sessions to give young people a flavour of what the project is all about, where they can meet other young people along with our staff and volunteers. They‘ll have a chance to ask any questions they might have, try out a couple of activities and decide whether this is for them.
