Sound of Guns - Sheffield

In the dark room of the Plug, Sheffield, the crowd waited with anticipation, with a large group stationing themselves in front of the stage with drinks in hand and a cheerful atmosphere taking hold. The band members ghosted on to the stage. The light cast shadows, catching the attention of the crowd, and Sound of Guns jumped in to their first song of the night. The atmosphere changed instantly as the music filled every dark corner. The excitement could be felt sweeping through the room as the speakers boomed and echoed through their bodies.
On the vocals, Andy Metcalfe, energetic, charismatic, what every front man should be, on the drums, Si Finley, laying into the drums mercilessly, on guitar, Lee Glynn and Nathan Crowley, their fingers dancing on the strings, and on bass, John Coley, his head down in total concentration.
Their beats were contagious, really winning the crowd over with their magic. Much to the enjoyment of the crowd, Metcalfe repeatedly climbed on to the front line and in to the crowd, only to have to scramble back up. A lucky lady in the crowd even had her photograph taken with her own camera, much to her amazement. We were also delighted to see Metcalfe climb in top of the boom boxes, after taking a swig from his beer, and successfully jump back down without breaking his ankle! No mean feat when you’re a tad tipsy.
By now the crowd were enthralled by the band’s vibe and as they heard the opening riff for ‘106’, several hands reached for the sky in a true rock salute (this being my favourite song of theirs, I was very pleased!).
At this point I went round to the side of the stage to take some shots of the guitarists. Crowley delivered with a show of rock hands which was received by several quick clicks from my camera. As the last note echoed round the room and died, it was met by vigorous applause. The band said their modest goodbye’s and left the stage, knowing that the crowd had had a great experience.
Feeling slightly deafened from standing next to boom boxes all night and very glad that I had attended the gig, I made my way home knowing that I would have their album on my shelf in the very near future.
I would like to thank Sam for organising the photo pass, and a huge thank you to Sound of Guns too.
