Patrick Stump - Soul Punk Review

Patrick Stump

Illinois Patrick Stump became a house hold name through his work in "Fall Out Boy", best known for his amazing variety of musical talent and his truly unique stand out vocals, has stepped back into the spot light with his very first (hopefully of many) solo album 'Soul Punk'. Returning to his roots, this album is a rare mix of Punk & R&B, a concept I was rather sceptical about at first but I can tell you right now, it has really worked here excellently.

Despite only containing 10 tracks, Soul Punk holds a great many favourite songs of mine. One that instantly springs to mind is 'Run Dry (X Heart X Fingers)' the longest song on the album (at 8:27). Regardless of this length, it always leaves me wishing the song would go on for just a bit longer; it's a perfect show case of Patrick's musical talent and to know that he produced the entirety of it (as well as the rest of the album) under his own steam just adds to the greatness of it all. Whether you like him or not, you can't deny that it is an impressive feat. The only instance in which he is not alone is in 'This City' a song written about the streets of Chicago, where Lupe Fiasco is featured to offer additional vocals to great effect.

The album ends with 'Coast (It's Gonna Get Better)' and honestly I cannot think of a better way in which to bring this great work to a close, this is a really upbeat song that never fails to put me in a great mood after listening. My instant reaction to the ending of the album was simple 'Wow', followed by me reaching over to hit the replay button ready to have my mind blown all over again.

Soul Punk is an album that really took me by surprise as I went in to it not really knowing what to expect but I can tell you now that this album is a truly great triumph and a high point for Patrick's career, filled with absolute gems of songs, and if Soul Punk is but the first of Patrick's solo albums then the future is definitely looking bright for this young musician.
