Music And Lyrics

Starring: Hugh Grant, Drew Barrymore, Brad Garrett and Kristen Johnston.

Music and Lyrics tells the story of a has-been pop star (Alex Fletcher played by Hugh Grant) and his struggle to pursue his solo career after the band he was part of in the 80’s, called “Pop” split up.

Alex’s manager, who seems a little unorganised, brings the news that a young pop singer by the name of Cora Corman loved “Pop” and wants to meet him. They go along to one of her video shoots and find that she’s not as sweet as they once thought. It turns out that Cora wants Alex to write her a song, which they will perform together at her tour opening night. Alex has a very little time to put the song together and hasn’t written in 10 years. He needs a writer, but when the one he hired writes lyrics that are dark and slightly worrying he has to do something about it.

This is where Sophie Fletcher comes in (Drew Barrymore). She isn’t a songwriter by profession but finds that she has a natural talent. Alex convinces her to help him and the story unfolds.

There are a few parts in this film where we learn about Sophie’s past which helps us to understand why she is the way she is as she comes across as being ‘not all there’ at times. Alex tries to help her but things don’t exactly go to plan.

So what did I think to Music and Lyrics?

Its one of those films that I don’t exactly love, but it’s not as bad as I thought it would be. If you like cheesy pop music and a cheesy ‘love story’ storyline then you’ll probably like it. I’d watch it again, but it won’t be in my top ten list. There isn’t much attention to detail with the storyline, no big plot twists or any big surprises which, I feel might have made the film a little better.

So the verdict:

5/10
