Mother Mother - Eureka

Formed in 2005, Mother Mother are an Indie-Rock quintet from Vancouver, Canada, who are back with their latest album Eureka. Interesting fact for you guys that don’t know of them, the main vocalists are actually brother and sister, whereas the rest of the band were recruited.
The first thing you’ll notice about the band is that they aren’t really mainstream. My initial thoughts from listening to the album were that it was kind of depressing, and repetitive. After giving it a second chance, I found myself tapping my foot through some of the songs, and really getting into the album (something I NEVER thought would have happened the first time I listened to it!). Even though I got into a couple of the songs, its fair to say that some of the tracks on the album sound like a musical mess... sometimes in a good way, and sometimes in a very negative way!
For me, the main standout songs were ‘Born In A Flash’, ‘Baby Dont Dance’ and ‘The Stand’, with the latter being the first released single from Eureka. Personally, I thought that ‘The Stand’ was the perfect choice for the first single! Even though it is very different to what I would usually listen to, I found myself repeatedly listening to this song and really getting into it. I can see myself cheekily putting this song on my ipod in the future! ;) “Baby Don’t Dance”, to me, has a kind of Scissor Sisters vibe with the high pitched singing, even though it stays true to the bands indie roots, and synth vocals. “Born In A Flash” really strangely reminded me a bit of Queen, in a good way. I absolutely do not know why though, but all I do know is that it is one of the best songs on the album, if you give it a chance!
In conclusion, I think that the album isn’t too bad... Based from my first impressions, I really didn’t want to pick it up again and listen to it, but trust me when I say that when you give it a chance, it does become pretty good. I still probably wouldn’t add it to my CD collection if I saw it in a shop though! Fans of the genre who may be looking to update their iPod should give this album a chance because it does stay true to that style of music! Overall, I’d give the album a 7 out of 10!
