Michael Georgiou - Interview

Comic Book Guy 2

Somehow comics were not a part of my early childhood so I thought 'hey what the heck I might learn something' and learn something I did! Mike's a great chap and was delightful to talk to, but he 'might chat your ears off so you've been warned!'

Mike: Initially I started off doing web comic called Steve & Bob but then I started working on Elemental Micah, which is a bit more grown up in its themes and subject. It's the story I wanted to write really, and that's my favourite thing about doing an indie comic, you can just do what you want. You can just do the comic that you really want to do so, er, yeah that's it really. It's just a way to tell the story I wanted to tell with lots of pretty pictures.

Abz: Is it more about the story and the characters because there tend to be a lot of CGI and explosions?

Mike: Yeah. This is all done in the computer so I suppose it's all CGI anyway…

Abz: Yeah.

Mike: There's a lot more development of the characters. Each book is its own short story, but it does have the same characters through it so there's that investment that goes throughout. It's a British thing, really, to sort of have stories dedicated to the character. To get into their minds and make them as grey as possible.

Abz: How long would you say it takes to make up a story and draw it all out?

Mike: Well, this [points to issue one of Elemental Micah] one took about three months and this one [points to issue four] took about a year [chuckles] so it varies completely. I mean I put a lot more work into the art in four because I wanted to see if I can make it as good as I can make it – that's the great thing about having your own deadlines.

Abz: So you can make it to the quality that you want.

Mike: Yeah. And just make it exactly how I want it to look. It's great, I mean, the reception that I've been getting is amazing so I'm just chuffed with how it's all turned out really.

Abz: So where abouts can people get your comics from?

Mike: You can get it from the website [Picks up website card] I'll just subtly put that up there [shows it to camera] elementalmicah.com

Abz: [Laugh because I know that the video isn't going to get onto the site. Couldn't see the web address anyway] We can take one with us.

Mike: You can get it off the website, send me an email, errr, carrier pigeon, what ever you like really or some sort of comic con, just have a look, have a chat you know. I will chat your ears off so you have been warned [points a warning finger to camera] So yeah…

Abz: Thank you very much!

Mike: Thank you!

Whilst at the Comic Com we interviewed a bunch of actors and they were great, all the people at the stalls were great too! They let us look at their stalls to our hearts content and were happy for us to ask not only a barrel of questions for our self interest, but the ever strange question of 'Hey, mind if I interview you?' at the drop of a hat. Mike was lovely to talk to which made this impromptu interview a lot easier! Thanks Mike!
