Making his debut performance at Leicester’s newest theatre venue – County-born Martin Lawrence will be bringing his artistic flare to Curve’s stage with Richard Alston’s Dance Company productions this month.
Retired dancer and now the companies Rehearsal Director, Lawrence is excited about seeing Overdrive, Shuffle it Right and To Dance and Skylark at Curve for the first time.
He said, “We used to do a lot of work with Haymarket Theatre but this will be the first time we’ve performed at Curve. I’ve seen some shows in the studio space but I’ve not seen the main stage so I’m really looking forward to it.”
The three dance piece will be hitting the stage from Tuesday, May 25 and Wednesday, May 26 with performances at 7.30pm.
Lawrence said, “The audience can expect lots of colour and beautiful music to these dance pieces. I’ve put together To Dance and Skylark and the fact that we’re coming to Leicester for the last leg of the national tour is quite poignant.”
Lawrence, who grew-up in Earl Shilton, Leicestershire, moved to London to study and joined Richard Alston’s Dance Company in 1995.
When asked if he missed being on stage, Lawrence said, “Not at all. I love directing and I know how much hard work you have to put in to dancing each night. I get to sit in the audience, usually in the middle towards the back and it’s great to see the show each night and see the audience react.”
He has been on tours with the company across the globe including some of his favourite venues in America, Indonesia, Russia and Holland.
He said, “I’d love to tour South America next because I’ve heard some of the venues are amazing there.”
