Lloyd - Interview 7 November 2009

Walking through this years Music Live exhibition we couldn't help but stop and listen to the distinctive sound of Lloyd, the English singer/songwriter, performing some of his more well known tracks. As we gathered the photos for music lives review I could not help but enjoy the well crafted emotional lyrics sweeping through the NEC’s hall, so as they exited the stage I was able to catch up with Lloyd backstage, to get some answers that all first time listeners to the band should know... here's the low-down...
What's your particular genre and maybe influences?
We have Rock elements, like, rock and new town soul, songs from Jeff Buckley I guess and Jimi Hendrix...listen to us on 'Myspace' and you'll see what I mean, our style is like Jeff Buckley with a rock element.
What are some of your favourite songs?
“Always Remember”, it’s like, yeah, “Hope I Remember You For Right Reasons”, I like them a lot...
Do you have any advice for people starting a band?
Don't be foolish, and do trust your own instincts. Only do it if you’re 100% committed to music or you wont get the enjoyment out of it and you wont have the will to carry on with it.
With games like “Guitar Hero”, do you think guitar based music is going to suffer, or is it a source of inspiration for a new generation of musicians?
Guitar music is still there, it's authentic and always comes back, it always has an audience and yeah, in the end everyone who is committed to it comes back to it. Sometimes a person will pick up a guitar and then return it the next day because they aren't committed to learning it, but there will always be those who are... and I think that will always be there.
So do you think “Guitar Hero” is a bad or good thing?
I think it doesn't make a difference, there's always going to be people who want the real thing, if you have dedication and passion you will always go and get your own guitar, nothing can replace that.
During our brief catch up with Lloyd you can’t help but like his down to earth affable nature, and his total honesty, something that shines through in his song writing. He’s had little sleep, just performed a full set with his excellent band, but still takes time out beside the stage to answer our questions, smiling, happy.
Amongst the down tuned heavy guitar rhythms of modern rock, or pro-tooled into oblivion chart pop songs, Lloyds music is like a breath of fresh air saving us from the suffocating corporate mainstream. Despite a relatively sleepless night (ah the joys of wedding parties staying in the same hotel as you), Lloyd put in an excellent performance, right down to the last song, Jackson’s “Billie Jean”.
We thank him for his time, and I wish him all the best for the future.
