Leicester's youngsters will soon be able to tryout the sport of baseball – and then play for a brand new youth baseball team – thanks to a new National Lottery funded project.

Leicester Blue Sox Baseball Club will be holding a six week 'Youth Baseball Camp' on Thursday evenings between 2 February and 8 March at Beauchamp College Sports Hall, Oadby.

The programme aims to bring boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 16 to the sport and establish new youth baseball teams. It is also hoped this will help form the beginnings of a Leicester youth baseball league.

This new sporting opportunity has been made possible by a £2,700 grant from Sport England – which is working with local communities to get more young people playing more sport.

Matt Crawshaw, Chairman at Leicester Blue Sox said

"We wish to offer something fresh and exciting to the young people of Leicester. With our facilities benefitting from a major upgrade this year, we are striving to become a flagship club for junior baseball in the Midlands. We're delighted to have received Lottery funding to help make it all happen."

Sport England invests National Lottery funding in projects that will grow and sustain participation in grassroots sport.

Anne Rippon Sport England's Regional Lead for the East Midlands said:

"The opportunity to try a new sport for the first time is often all a person needs to catch the sporting bug. The Leicester Youth Baseball Camp is a great way for young people to try out baseball and have a quality sporting experience that will encourage them to stay involved."
