Leicester City - Iain Hume Interview
Posted by Guest Writer on Tue, 21 Aug 2007.
Lucky for us the sunshine had broken through for our interview with the Scottish born Canadian international, Iain Hume. Given that Iain has now signed a three year dear, Foxes fans can breathe a sigh of relief, and we’re grateful that this charismatic player has given us the chance to meet with him at the Foxes training ground.
On time, he enters the room, and puts everybody at ease with his friendliness, settles into his chair, and the interview begins:
Possibly the most obvious question to start off with but what is your goal for the season?
Just to basically improve on what I did last year, I normally try and do that, I try to set myself reasonable targets which are not too out of my reach, it's possible with this team, it's possible to beat it with 14 goals I reached at the end of last season.
Personally what chance do you think the team has of getting promotion?
If we can gel together quickly which normally doesn't happen when you rebuild a team, but if we can do that then I don't see why we can't make the play off's at least this year.
Since Milan Mandaric has taken over what has changed within the squad?
Everything, he has changed absolutely everything, along with Martin Allen, he has brought his own staff, his own ideas and the way he likes to do things. Everything to do with the training ground, the match days, the changing rooms and everything. He has just tried changing the club from top to bottom.
Which out of all the new players has impressed you the most?
Everyone has looked top to me, but you have got to say the obvious ones like Bruno N'Gotty, Steven Clemence, Kishishev, we have just brought in DJ Campbell who looks sharp, he is a prolific poacher who will get you goals.
What is it like playing for Canada as you were born in Edinburgh, Scotland, do you ever wish that you could have played for Scotland?
Well I had the choice when I was 15, I got asked to play for the under 16 Scotland side, to be honest with me growing up in Canada and with me playing under twenties for Canada it was a no brainer, my heart lies in Canada, everyone who knows me knows that.
Growing up as a boy who was your biggest idol?
Well in the earlier years it was Ian Rush, John Barnes because I’m a Liverpool fan (though I’m also a Hearts fan because all my family are from Edinburgh), and John Robertson.
What was the biggest step up when making your move from Tranmere Rovers?
Just up rooting. All my wife's family are from Tranmere, just up rooting her and our daughter two hours down the road, so obviously it was harder for her then what it was for me because I am used to being away from my family because I have been away from them all since I was 15.
What was it like for you personally after scoring the winner in Tranmere's 2004 FA Cup campaign against Bolton?
It was good, it got us through, it was like the first minute of extra time which was a pain as we had about 29 minutes to go but fortunately I got the winner in the next round against Swansea as well, it was a good year for me that year.
How happy were you to sign your new contract at Leicester City in June?
Ecstatic to be honest with you, it was in the papers this week, I had been asking for about a year, and there were little things which kept having to be put off, when I finally agreed terms this summer it was massive because my family and I have really settled in here and we are really enjoying everything about being in Leicester and I want to be here for as long as possible.
Who is the hardest trainer?
James Wesolowski, he is an absolute animal, his heart rate monitor tells you that it works at 150% every session.
Who is the 'hard man'?
I would have to say Paddy Kisnorbo; I'd have to say he is probably the hardest. He's a bit of a loop, but he is the type of player you need in your team because you know he will give you everything.
Who is the most skilful?
I don't know really, it would be a toss up between Levi Porter and DJ; they are both good with the ball at their feet.
Who has the best dress sense?
I know Mark De Vries definitely hasn't (Iain laughs), he hasn't got the best dress sense in the world but it is hard to judge right now because most of the lads are new.
Who do you get on best with in the team?
It has to be Mattie, he is my little mate, and we always share a room when we go to away games, we just get along really well, gelled really quickly and it's good to have a mate like that.
Who has the best sense of humour?
To be honest everybody, there isn't anyone who is uptight, so I would say everybody.
Finally do you have any words for the Jitty readers and all Leicester City fans for Leicester City's future?
Just stick together, although we didn't produce last Saturday it will come so stick by us.
