I got this album a little while ago in a sale, and to be honest had never really heard of them or their music. But what an investment in a great album!

Just for the record (ok that was a bad pun) Lacuna Coil are an Italian band who broke onto the music scene with their first EP in 1998. Their sound can only be described as unique, and dare I say, ethereal. If you like the sound of Evanescence then maybe you should give Lacuna Coil a go as well, and since their initial debut they have gone on to release three full albums.

What I got from this album was an almost now trademarked balanced mixture of Gothic Metal, Gothic Rock, with a full sound, heavy guitars and some very impressive female vocals from one Cristina Scabbia. I must say that I wasn’t particularly blown away by the male vocals of Andrea Ferro, but they aren’t bad either.

Some comparison has been made to some of the early records done by a certain band by the name of Queensryche (which just so happens to be my favourite band ever), and having listened to the album I can certainly see why, especially with tracks like “Swamped” and “Daylight Dancer”. What I like even more is that the album isn’t just a repetition of the same, such as Evanescence. The problem with Ms Amy Lee and her entourage is that they produced an album which quite frankly I sometimes got bored of listening to half way through. The same can’t be said for Lacuna Coil. I also found Evanescence sometimes too “Nu-Metal”, too “American”, and found my recent purchase quite a refreshing change.

All in all, very pleased with this, and would certainly recommend it.
