It’s great to find new talent such as the likes of Logan, Twin Atlantic but for a while it seemed that Scotland was having a monopoly on producing great bands at the moment, but at last, and to my surprise, something awesome is emerging from south of the border, and it’s Godsized! The surprise element there is because for a while (and to my shame) I thought they were an American rock outfit from the “Deep South”, with elements of Black Label Society, Zakk Wylde and The Sword.
“The Phoney Tough & The Crazy Brave” is their latest EP, with three songs, “The Phoney Tough & The Crazy Brave”, “So I’m Told” and “Bleed On The Inside”, and I can’t stop playing the damned things! The music pounds like a sledgehammer, technically brilliant and with an incredible bounce and fluidity to their songs. Each song is well crafted, with some terrific frenetic guitar work from Neil Fish, and the vocals from Glen Korner coming as a great surprise and compliment to the blistering riffs perfectly. And that doesn’t mean Effon and Gavin Kerrigan are the “also rans” in the band to support Korner and Fish or make up the numbers, not at all. Both are an essential part of the band laying down an absolute granite solid base.
It just seems so effortlessly good, so damned right, that it’s easy to see why their fan base is rapidly growing. We need some new bands to carry the flag, and Godsized might be a worthy contender. My only criticism? More! We demand more! It’s not long enough damn it!!
