Sexuality can be a really confusing thing, especially in your teenage years, for many people they do not decide firmly on their sexuality until they reach adulthood.
Here are some helpful tips for anyone experiencing confusion over their sexuality, and what to do about it:
- If you are questioning your sexuality, or have decided that your are gay, bi or lesbian….. DON'T WORRY. You are not on your own, and you are not abnormal. Loads of people are gay, bi and lesbian.
- If you thinking about 'coming out' talk to someone you can trust first, this may you to get things straight in your head, before just diving in.
- Be prepared that some people may not be positive, and try telling someone who you know will react well first. Don't tell someone just because you feel pressured - do it in your own time, at your own pace.
- Some people are homophobic (meaning that they don't like the way LGB people live). You may have already had this experience within school, especially among young men (although girls can be very homophobic too). Some young people are homophobic because they have not yet decided where they stand, and how they feel, and will grow out of it as they mature.
- Always think very carefully before coming out at school, discuss it with someone first.
- If you are suffering homophobic bulling at school, your school has a duty to deal with it, and should not just ignore it. If it is not being dealt with go straight to your head.
- Be careful about rushing straight out onto the gay scene, the scene can be a great place, but also a very scary one for young people (Remember that if you are under 18, you are breaking the law!)
- Always go out with someone, and stay with them all night.
- Do not leave drinks where they could be spiked
- Carry a mobile phone for emergencies.
