Gary Go - Gary Go

Huh what? Wait… you mean you don’t know who Gary Go is?! Ok let me explain…
Gary Go, born Gary Baker was raised in the shadows of Wembley stadium London in the 80’s. He was inspired from a young age by music from the likes of U2 and the Rolling Stones. He taught himself how to play several musical instruments and by the age of 8 had written his first song ‘Stomach Ground’ on his toy Casio. His cousin let him sit in on recording sessions with his own band and this gave Gary the taste he needed to know this is what he wanted to do. By the age of 17 he left school to pursue his love of music and ended up in a bottom rung job at a record company and recording studio making tea, sorting mail and setting up the microphones that he longed to be singing his words into. A crazy set of events lead Gary Go to New Jersey to work at a legendary recording studio and managed to find himself living in a room at Frank Sinatra’s old house on Garden St. It was here that he composed several of the songs that would see him signed to Decca records and it was here that inspired the 6th song on the album ‘Brooklyn’ .
After already winning fans on the small circuit and supporting the likes of The Script, The Fratellis and the feeling it’s not surprising that somebody bigger spotted his raw talent and passion for what he does. Gary Go was chosen by none other than Take That to join them in their new tour ‘Circus’ and is currently performing to over a million people in the space of a month and will have performed at the very stadium that inspired him to begin his musical career.
All clear now? Ok lets get back to business!
The album starts with a feeling of optimism with ‘Open Arms’, seemingly a search for acceptance. Whatever happened to good things coming to those who wait… Gary Go has this natural talent for narrating through his songs… each one tells a subtle story about life.
“So take me back to the London town that brought me up, ‘cos it’s bringing me down…” a snippet of the lyrics in the second song on the album. I have to say that this was the song that got me interested in Gary Go. The fresh, truthful words accompanied with the stadium ready pop/rock sounds a little Oasis inspired and keeps you hooked throughout. This song highlights how important London has been to him throughout his travels.
‘Engines’, a romantically reflective song. Likening love to an engine, when the love stops so do the cogs of life. One thing I notice about the songs with a gloomier subject is that they don’t sound whiny in any way. There is still that optimism and idea of picking yourself up.
Its no wonder that his songs are said to be like little self-help guides. The next track ‘Wonderful’ being the epitome of this. The main message behind this track is that everything might look dark and things might not go your way but you got to look your self in the eye and say I am wonderful. We are all miracles.
The album really is uplifting, fresh and inspiring, a welcome addition to anybody’s music collection.
Gary Go; A self-taught narrator without the self pitying broken guitar string of yet another songwriter.
Gary Go; one to look out for in 2009.
Gary Go; He really is quite ‘Wonderful’.
