Foo Fighters - Echoes

Dave Grohl
Taylor Hawkins
Nate Mendel
Chris Shiflett

The 6th studio album from post-grunge band the Foo Fighters, "Echoes..." was rumoured by NME to be the album that Grohl has always threatened to make. Eager to get my hands on the album, I had read excellent reviews and had high hopes of it.

I certainly was not disappointed with this latest offering. In fact, to say I wasn't disappointed is an under statement. In actual fact, I was totally in awe, both the first time I listened to the album, and every time since.

The album kicks off to a great start with the superb single The Pretender. With it's Stairway-to-heaven-esque intro music and it's gutsy, powerful chorus, it's no wonder the song was chosen as the first single from the album. The video also happens to be amazing.

Let it die is a typical acoustic to electric building song, with beautiful lyrics and a similar style to Come Alive. Both are personal favourites of mine, alongside Stranger things have happened, a song that sounds like Grohl's old band Nirvana.

The band's instrumental song, Ballad of the Beaconsfield Miners was written for the miners who were trapped down a mine in Tasmania for days. When discovered, they asked if they could be lowered down an iPod loaded with Foo Fighters tracks for them to listen to whilst waiting to be rescued.

Statues is another great song off the album, and provides a bit of variety, with it's country style sound and it's romantic lyrics.

Of all the songs on "Echoes...", my favourite is probably But, honestly. Again following the building style of a rock ballad, the guitar solo at the end sounds like something The Who would play.

I am aware that opinions of music differ vastly. My friend for instance, who I thought had a pretty reasonable taste in music, hates this album. I on the other hand, would go so far as to call it the album of the decade. For me anyway.

Plus, it makes excellent music to revise to.

If you want to hear something worth hearing, something that will be talked about in 20, 30, 40 years time, then by this album. It's full of music that gets to your soul and makes you feel alive. It's feel good beyond belief.
