Adrian: Drums

“Fight Like Apes” are an Irish four piece indie/punk band hailing from Dublin, consisting of Tom on bass, Adrian on drums, “Pockets” on keyboard, along with the fine vocal work of MayKay, and we were lucky enough to catch them at the Charlotte music venue on the 11th November 2008.

It was a compact audience who turned up to the intimate gig, among whom you could find the friends and family of the band, but genuinely really enjoying the music. Nobody was exactly jumping around, but there was plenty of vigorous tapping of feet. In fact there was a lady standing next to me who got right into the music, head banging as if she was possessed, but in a good way of course!

There was a definite beginning to the performance, the band walked on and basically just burst into song which got everyone ready for what was coming up next. But there wasn’t the typical walk off, wait for cheers, walk back on, do encore, bow, walk off, they didn’t even announce that the last song was coming. All they did was finish the final song, “knuckle head”, said thank you, jumped off the stage and ran to the merchandise stand.

The singer was quite a scary looking person, she had rather large black hair and she liked to swing it around so it was in her face, she also came over the front barrier, her bobbing head up and down with her hair whipping me, or anybody else who happened to be at the front. You could tell she wasn’t scared of what people thought, and although she looks scary and intimidating it turns out she’s actually a really nice lady as we met her afterwards. The songs played can be found on their Myspace, and on their album…if you live in Ireland.

Overall I’d say the night was a total success. I bagged myself a pair of flashy sunglasses from the random dancing keyboard player. I recommend going to one of their up and coming gigs although that was the only time in Leicester on their 2008 tour.
