Fall Out Boy - An Evening Out With Your Girlfriend

Fall Out Boy

Released in 2003, Illinois pop / punk / rock quartet, Fall Out Boy’s debut and rather unheard of ‘Evening out with your Girlfriend’ album was the album that got the ball rolling for Patrick Stump, Pete Wentz, Joe Trohman and Mike Pareskuwicz. Was the album unheard of for a reason though?

The album itself consists of only nine tracks and fills just less than half an hour, perhaps indicative of a first tentative step into the music industry. However, what it lacks in length in makes up for by simply utilising the bands talents. Step forward Patrick Stump a man with one of the most unique voices in the music business, who composed and wrote the lyrics throughout the entirety of this album. All though at times during this album there a slightly noticeable issue were the timing of the instruments seems to slip slightly, but other than that the songs are a good listen and fairly memorable.

Pretty in Punk (a play on the 80’s teen “Rom Com” film title ‘Pretty in Pink’, starring Molly Ringwald) is a favourite of mine not necessarily for the music itself but the lyrics (I was terrified and would you mind if I sat next to you and watched you smile), paints a story about that first crush which most of us can relate to. Opening track “Honourable Mention” is another personal favourite, but I still have this burning question of “Why John Cusack?”, any way, the track itself is fairly upbeat with an intro by Patrick that for some reason, people don’t often ask “who does that”.

All in all, this album is certainly not one for a first time listener of Fall Out Boy, but for a real fan of their work this is a good purchase, but beware, we have seen this album exchanging hands for silly money (eBay seems to range from £1.99 to £75)!
