Dr Who - The Chase

Written by John Peel, 'Dr Who –The Chase' follows the Doctor of 1965 though a fast paced chase across the universe with the Daleks (voiced by Nicholas Briggs) constantly on their tail. Only, it isn't read with all that much pace at all. Read by Maureen O'Brien it is slow with little vocal expression and excitement making a well loved series slightly boring.

As I have never been a lover of audio books I thought that it being Dr Who may change my mind whereas all it's done is make me swear off them forever. It seems that the producers missed a trick in having different sound effects for the different races of aliens (there are three in the story) and constantly used the same pieces of atmospheric music making even the more exciting moments a little repetitive. The story line was kind of predictable in that yes the Doctor and his companions – Barbara, Vicki and Ian - escape the Daleks on the numerous occasions that they encountered them and got to safety in the end.

What does give the story life is that the Daleks sound like Daleks (don't have your headphones on too loud guys, you may accidentally have your ears exterminated!) and O'Brien uses a different voice for each character we meet as we hitch hike in the TARDIS.

Dr Who fans who like audio books may find it a good listen but in reality, if you're thinking of getting into the franchise or trying to convince a friend – don't get this.
