Call of Duty: World at War (PS2)

The training level starts, in good old hand holding fasion, with a pretty shot of an American barn house. In the background you can hear gunfire and there are warplanes flying around. Your character, Pvt Joe Miller, has a bad start to his military career because he forgets his rifle, still, at least he manages to dress himself successfully. Your sergeant pulls up in a jeep and sends you on your way. What follows is an easy tutorial where you despatch scarecrows in melee or with a variety of firearms. The level flows well and poses no threat to even the most basic player, except maybe serious hayfever.
The game is mainly focused on the war in the pacific theatre but occasionally moves over to Europe, with some impressive tank levels thrown in for good measure. However one level presents an insane run to place a bomb whilst coming under stupid amounts of rifle and machine gun fire, raining lead. This part annoyed me until I realised you could kill the machine gunner for about 5 secs, and also discovered a hand held machine gun I could use to get to the target without being turned into a hole riddled bit of Gorgonzola. So the levels are challenging that's for sure, and running and gunning won't be a successful tactic all the time.
The graphics and game flow are impressive. There has been a lot of attention paid to the SFX as well. The developers went and recorded the sounds of the guns in real life to get as close to reality as possible. You battle through unique levels, some see you storming a Japanese Strongpoint whilst others see you drive your Sherman tank into battle with Panzer tanks and anti-tank infantry. This makes for good variety and stops the game from being too reptitive.
The only big let down on the game for the PS2 is the multiplayer section, there isn't one. Once you have completed the campaign, you can either go again on the same difficulty or challenge your self with higher difficulties, but there are no other game modes. Whereas in rainbow six games you find extra options like terrorist hunt or sniper. This means that you play through the game, hungry for the bonus part that never comes.
All in all though, a great game for fps enthusiasts!
