Chase and Status

Posted by bugrach on Thu, 13 May 2010.

Chase and Status are the latest craze to hit the drum and bass / dub-step scene, and on Tuesday 11th May they played Nottingham’s Rock City.

The history of the band is that Saul (Chase) and Will (Status) met back in 90’s whilst at Manchester University and in 2004 they released their first production which was a remix for Future Cut (Lily Allen), which then lead to them producing tracks for a number of underground labels. Their album ‘More Than A Lot’ was released last year and after the band announced and played numerous new tracks at the gig it was apparent that a new album is in the making.

More fingers than what can be supplied in a Cadburys box would be needed to count the amount of acts that Jitty members have seen perform at Rock City, but never before has the place been seen as alive as it was that night. The place was filled up before the support acts (Delvin) arrived and they were all in good spirits even after the news of Nottingham Forest losing. Chants were made and mosh pits were formed, and with the crowd warmed up before Chase and Status hit the stage, the crowed were ready for them.

One conclusion made about drum and bass music is that you don’t go to a gig to watch the band perform, you go to a gig to listen to them perform their music. Chase and Status were immense – the bass was so high that when breathing through your nostrils you felt vibrations. A mixture of new and old tracks was performed and from what I can gather Tinie Tempah also joined the stage. It had been announced on the groups MySpace that he was to join them on some of their tour dates, but according to his Twitter it seems he was opening for Rihanna that night so this cannot be confirmed.

It was a brilliant night for Rock City and a brilliant night for all the Chase and Status fans who clearly spent all night sucked into their music, there really was no such line as ‘you can do better than that’ because the next step would have been to raise the roof, literally.

Chase and Status are coming towards the end of their 29 date tour but looking further into 2010, according to the bands My Space they have just signed a major record deal with Vertigo on Mercury Records and have begun working on their second album. Watch out for them because they are going to be one of the big names in music this summer.
