Interview with Alexia Chellun

On first impressions, Brighton-based singer-songwriter Alexia Chellun is as down to earth as they come. Non-assuming and infectiously good natured, she oozes a childlike enthusiasm that could melt even the coldest of hearts. Meeting up for a chat before she plays the Orange Tree stage at this year’s Big Session festival, a ridiculously smiley and excited Alexia chats to me about her influences, the Brighton music scene, and why she’d like to be back at Big Session next summer.
A self-taught musician, Alexia was inspired to learn by a friend. “I started singing around a campfire,” she tells me, “some of my friends were singing, and I really wanted to learn, so I said to my friend who was playing guitar ‘Will you teach me a song?’ And she did! So I learnt a song, for months, and then just carried on learning.”
She tells me that she started writing her own songs around the same time – “That was about ten years ago now.” Since then she’s been touring, playing intimate gigs and festivals. “I recently supported Po’Girl” she gushes, “That was really fun, they’re an amazing band”.
“I’ve just done a few festivals in Brighton and around the country, it’s been really fun.” When asked if she prefers festivals to normal gigs, she tells me that she enjoys both. “They’re all really nice..."
