Alan Pownall

Ok, so it's pigeon-holing, lazy-journalism, unoriginal labelling... call it what you will. But there's a reason people are calling art-student turned songwriter Alan Pownall the British Jack Johnson. Throw in a dose of pre-Kanye Mr Hudson, mix with a dollop of 1940s vintage and a few sprinkles of "Wild-thing"-esque Lou Reed, and then of course, blend with the subtley delicious, sunshine-infused melodies of Mr Johnson and there you have it... Pownall in all of his glorious, endearingly, captivatingly quaint beauty.

The Eliot James (Bloc Party, Kaiser Chiefs) produced debut album from the art-school dropout (Pownall quit his course in Italy to pursue a career in music) is due to be released in May 2010 on Mercury Records, and is set to be an original and stunning record.

Pownall has only been touring for around a year, and has opened shows for the likes of Laura Marling, Noah and the Whale, Florence + The Machine and Mr Hudson. Spotted early on by Brit-school success story Adele, who after a chance meeting sought him out on MySpace and invited him to support her on her first time, Pownall leads a private and withdrawn life, shunning publicity.

Currently managed by ATC, he's one to watch for 2010.
