Advance Wars: Dark Conflict - DS

Advance Wars Dark Conflict is the fourth game in the advance wars series. It takes a new twist with the disappearance of the main characters. The cutesy graphics that were in the previous games have gone, replaced with a much darker story and graphics.

The game starts with the first instalement of the story. “Our world is destroyed. After the meteors struck, the land blazed, the earth shook, the oceans boiled. 90% of mankind is gone. Dust covers the earth, blotting out all traces of sunlight. What will come next? No one can answer that. But among the destruction, there are survivors...”

As soon as the prelude finishes, the game plunges straight into the action. A fight between a sole survivor and some soldiers turned bandits has broken out and you have to defend the survivor. The story continues to different locations and difficult situations. By the end of the game, there are some very tactically challenging missions.

The game also takes a new turn by introducing a new version of the campaign mode (story mode). Instead of the old version, where once a mission was cleared it couldn’t be played again unless the player started again, the campaign is now over a map and any point can be revisited at any point in time. There are also over 30 side missions that range in difficulty and can be replayed like the main missions.

Another new feature in this game is the ability to play online over the Nintendo wi-fi system. The player can have a game against anyone in the world with a random map chosen by the system. There is also a map centre over the Wi-Fi. The player can send any of the maps that they have created in the design room into the map centre for anyone else to download. The player can also download a recommended map or a random map. Then, once the map has been cleared, the player can give it a rating for other players to see. Finally, the character can also see how well their latest uploaded map is being rated.

This new version of an old classic is a great buy for the Nintendo DS at £30 pounds from most game shops and can provide hours of fun. This is a great game to buy if you like:- Turn Based Strategy/Tactical games like Final Fantasy Tactics, Other Advance Wars games or the previous wars games by Nintendo such as Famicom Wars, a new, interesting challenge.
